How to choose your first IRONMAN 70.3 (without regretting it)
Updated
An IRONMAN 70.3 is a 1.9 km (1.2 mile) swim, a 90 km (56 mile) bike and a 21.1 km (13.1 mile) run, back to back, on purpose. Getting fit enough for that is on you. Picking the race takes one evening, and it quietly decides a lot about your day: how cold the water is, how many hills you climb, and whether race week starts with a bike box and a missed connection.
There are 117 upcoming IRONMAN 70.3 races in our data. That's a lot of choice for someone who hasn't done one yet. Below are six questions that cut it down to a shortlist: training time, terrain, the swim, heat, travel and a final tiebreak, plus the cut-off times you should know before you hit "enter". Each step links to a page that does the filtering for you.
1. Start with time, not place
The classic first-race mistake is picking one that's too soon. Count back from race day and be honest about how many weeks of steady training you can fit around work, family and sleep. Then look at what's on in the months that work. The beach in the photo can wait.
70.3 races run all year because they span both hemispheres. Our races by month pages list every upcoming race for each month. A few patterns from our data:
- Northern summer (June to August) is the busiest stretch, with lots of races in Europe and North America.
- Northern winter (December to February) is quieter, with many of the options in the Southern Hemisphere, the tropics or the Middle East.
- Spring and autumn mix both, which helps if you'd like to dodge peak summer heat.
Right now, for example, there are 16 upcoming 70.3s in June and 2 in January.
While you're looking at dates, check the cut-offs. At most IRONMAN 70.3 races you have 1 hour 10 minutes for the swim, 5 hours 30 minutes to finish the swim, first transition and bike, and 8 hours 30 minutes for the whole course. All of these are counted from your own swim start. Some races differ, so confirm the numbers in the athlete guide for your race. Cut-offs are not the moment for optimism.
2. Pick terrain that matches your training
Every race in our data has a bike and run course type: Flat, Rolling or Hilly. These come from the official IRONMAN race pages. For a first 70.3, a flat or rolling course lets you think about pacing and nutrition instead of how much longer this hill can possibly go on.
Our beginner-friendly races list uses a simple, transparent rule: any 5150 (Olympic-distance) race, plus any IRONMAN 70.3 where both the bike and run are rated Flat. Here are the next few flat-and-flat 70.3s on the calendar:
- IRONMAN 70.3 Türkiye — November 1, 2026, Belek, Türkiye
Flat bike, flat run · ocean swim · water 77°F / 25°C · air 71°F / 22°C · nearest airport: Antalya Airport (AYT) - IRONMAN 70.3 Kenting — November 1, 2026, Kenting, Chinese Taipei

Flat bike, flat run · bay swim · water 85°F / 29°C · air 83°F / 28°C · nearest airport: Rafael Núñez International Airport (CTG)
For the full list grouped by continent, see the flattest IRONMAN 70.3 courses. You can also browse flat bike courses or flat run courses on their own.
One warning: flat is not the same as easy. Wind on an exposed flat course can be brutal, and holding one riding position for two to four hours takes practice. If you live somewhere hilly, a rolling course may suit your training better than a pancake.
3. Choose your swim: water type and temperature
For a lot of first-timers the swim is the part that keeps them up at night, so it's worth choosing carefully.
Water type. Our data lists the swim venue as ocean, sea, bay, lake, river, reservoir or harbour. Lakes and reservoirs are usually calmer than open ocean. Rivers can have current. If most of your swimming happens between lane ropes, a calm lake is a much kinder introduction to open water.
Water temperature and wetsuits. A wetsuit adds buoyancy and warmth, and plenty of newer swimmers find it reassuring, even if getting it off in transition is its own small event. Under the 2026 IRONMAN Competition Rules (section 4.02), age-group athletes:
- must wear a wetsuit below 60.8°F (16°C);
- may wear one up to and including 76.1°F (24.5°C);
- may wear one between 76.1°F and 83.8°F (28.8°C) only at events that offer a separate non-competitive wetsuit wave, where they can't win age-group awards or World Championship slots;
- can't wear one above 83.8°F (28.8°C).
The final call is made from the water temperature measured on race morning. Our wetsuit-likely races list shows races whose typical water temperature is 76°F (24°C) or below. It's a useful guide, not a guarantee. Here are the next few wetsuit-likely 70.3s:
- IRONMAN 70.3 Melbourne — November 8, 2026, St. Kilda, VIC, Australia

Flat bike, flat run · bay swim · water 74°F / 23°C (wetsuit-likely) · air 74°F / 23°C · nearest airport: Bahrain International Airport (BAH)
4. Be honest about heat
Heat gets almost everyone, and it hits hardest if you train somewhere cool. Each event page on Find My Tris shows a typical air and water temperature for the race. When you compare options, ask yourself:
- Have I actually trained in this kind of heat?
- Can I get there a few days early to adjust?
- Does the race start early enough to finish the run before the hottest part of the day? The athlete guide will tell you.
If you'd rather keep things cool, a wetsuit-likely race in spring or autumn is a sensible place to start.
5. Make travel boring
Your first 70.3 has enough moving parts without an adventure getting there. Every event page lists the nearest airport from our data. Things to weigh up:
- Can you drive? A race within driving distance means no packing a bike for a flight, and you can bring your own food and gear.
- If you fly, how far is the airport? A short transfer from a major airport is far easier with a bike box than a long trek from a regional one.
- Time zones. Crossing several in race week can wreck your sleep and your digestion, neither of which you want to gamble with. If you can, pick a race in or near your own time zone.
Browsing races by continent is a quick way to see what's within reach. For example, here are the next few in Europe and North America:
- IRONMAN 70.3 Türkiye — November 1, 2026, Belek, Türkiye
Flat bike, flat run · ocean swim · water 77°F / 25°C · air 71°F / 22°C · nearest airport: Antalya Airport (AYT) - IRONMAN 70.3 Vilamoura-Algarve — April 3, 2027, Vilamoura, Portugal

Flat bike, flat run · ocean swim · water 77°F / 25°C · air 76°F / 24°C · nearest airport: General Heriberto Jara International Airport (VER)
6. Shortlist, then read the athlete guide
Once you have two or three candidates, open each event page on Find My Tris and follow the link to the official IRONMAN race page. That's where you'll find entry details, course maps and, closer to the date, the athlete guide with exact cut-offs, swim start format and race-day schedule. Our data gets you to a shortlist. The official guide is the final word.
To pick a winner, ask three questions:
- Which gives you the most realistic training time?
- Which course and conditions are closest to where you train?
- Which is the easiest trip?
The race that wins two of the three is usually a very good first choice. Then stop refreshing the entry page and go train.
